Yesterday we heard some rumors of The Viking David Ronnefalk leaving Matrix Racing Tires as he updated his sponsor list on facebook. We reached out for him and he confirmed that his run with Matrix is over for now and he will continue with no tire sponsor.
David told us that with his signing to xray he is now running multiple classes full time not just 8th scale offroad. He said commiting to just one brand would not be beneficial for him nor the manufacturer as he would be running a limited amount of races in 8th scale anyway.

Seems like no drama here but a big move either way! The interesting aspect of this is the fact that as of now both Xray top drivers David and Bruno are running 8th scale with no tire sponsor. There should be no doubt this is a strategy XRAY has chosen, does it give them a slight edge on their competitor brands?
We saw Sworkz do this when they signed Boots and JC3 for TPro where they were still allowed to use any tire available. That being said both drivers have since gone to sign for tire brands. David also ran with no tire sponsor in his last years at HB and first year at Mayako winning multiple DNC titles as well as a Euros title. Is this going to become more common as the tire market gets more competitive?
As the 40+ Euros will be ran on a spec tire for the first time this year there is a noticeable push inside EFRA to transfer to spec tire in 8th scale. It will be interesting to see if more chassis manufacturers will start requiring their drivers have no tire sponsor and a spec tire to end up become inevitable or will drivers still be commited to their sponsors.
